How to keep my dog’s teeth healthy?

Canine dental hygiene is as important as human dental hygiene. Ignoring a build-up of plaque can lead to problems such as dental disease – which is extremely common in dogs.

To avoid expensive costs for dental treatment or teeth removal – make sure to clean/ check your dog’s teeth as part of their regular routine.

  • Look at their diet – if you’re feeding your dog wet food only, look at integrating some dry kibble as this will not only have a mild cleaning effect but also exercises their chewing muscles.
  • Dental chews and treats are a good way of helping to keep your dog’s teeth clean.
  • Brush their teeth regularly and for best practice, start cleaning your dog’s teeth as a puppy.

How to clean your dog’s teeth?

  • Consult your vet first to get the best advice for your dog. Different breeds of dogs have varying jaw alignments and how the teeth meet. Pugs, Chihuahuas, and other flat-faced dogs have poorly aligned jaws and may suffer from overcrowding or missing teeth – this can mean they are at higher risk of suffering from dental disease.
  • Start cleaning as young as possible, ideally as a puppy – the earlier you can introduce them into this routine, the easier it’ll become for you. If you haven’t brushed the teeth before – start by introducing your finger near their mouth. Gradually move your finger closer and then in the mouth, then start by doing the same with whichever brushing device you choose.
  • Buy a doggie toothpaste – human toothpaste is not suitable for dogs. They can come in different flavours such as mint or liver. Choosing a toothpaste that smells yummy may make the cleaning experience for pleasant for your pup.

Signs of dental disease

Dental disease can start quite suddenly or progress over time. Make sure you know the signs.

  • Deposits may build up on the teeth.
  • Gums will be damaged and bleed.
  • Foul-smelling breath
  • The root of the tooth may be exposed and sensitive.
  • Discolouration of the teeth
  • Lack of appetite and difficulty eating

If your dog has any of these symptoms, contact your vet.
